rolled felt in bowls

Some makers create beautiful objects. Others create a way of living. Muskhane has always felt like the latter.

Founded in France and brought to life through long-standing partnerships with artisans in Nepal, Muskhane celebrates the simple beauty of natural wool and traditional craftsmanship. Every piece begins with New Zealand wool, chosen for its softness, durability and renewable qualities. The wool is dyed using non-toxic, AZO-free dyes before being transformed by hand using one of the world's oldest textile techniques: wet felting.

Unlike woven fabrics or machine-made textiles, felt is created by gently binding together loose wool fibres using only warm water, natural soap and repeated handwork. It is a slow, physical process that cannot be rushed. Each basket, flower, rug, cushion or decorative object passes through many hands before it is finished, carrying with it the subtle variations that make handmade work so special. No two pieces are ever completely identical, and we believe that is exactly as it should be.

For the women who make Muskhane's collections, this craft also provides meaningful, fairly paid employment while allowing many to continue working within their own communities. The skills have been passed down through generations, preserving traditional techniques while creating opportunities for economic independence. It's a philosophy of making that values people just as much as the finished object.

At Mondocherry, we've loved Muskhane for many years because their collections bring something difficult to describe but instantly recognisable: warmth. The softness of felt absorbs sound, introduces gentle texture and invites touch. Whether it's a basket holding kindling beside the fire, felt mushrooms adding a little whimsy to a bookshelf, or a chair pad making an everyday seat just a little more inviting, these are pieces that quietly become part of daily life.

Their colours are equally thoughtful. Inspired by nature rather than passing trends, the palette sits comfortably alongside timber, linen, ceramics and our own botanical paper artworks. They layer beautifully into homes that have been collected slowly over time, adding depth without demanding attention.

In a world increasingly filled with things made quickly and forgotten just as fast, Muskhane reminds us that lasting beauty often begins with simple materials, skilled hands and time. And perhaps that's why these pieces continue to feel as relevant today as they will many years from now.

It's exactly the kind of making we love to share. Beautifully considered, ethically produced and created to bring quiet pleasure to everyday life.
