Studio Roof

Colourful wall decorations that you put together yourself

Studio Roof has a wonderful way of turning something as ordinary as a flat sheet of cardboard into something full of colour, movement and character. Birds appear to take flight from the wall, butterflies hover above shelves and flowers bloom in places you might not expect them.

Founded in Amsterdam in 2005 by Romy and Ilya, Studio Roof began as a family project built around a belief that creativity, play and sustainability could sit happily together. Twenty years later, it has grown into an internationally recognised design studio, while remaining very much a family affair - their children, now young adults, are still involved in the business.

Nature and art are at the centre of their designs. Their collections draw on birds, insects, flowers and other forms from the natural world, but interpret them in bold, imaginative combinations of colour and pattern. Each piece arrives flat packed and is assembled by hand at home, so part of the pleasure is in seeing a simple material gradually become a three-dimensional object. Studio Roof makes its designs from recycled cardboard and prints them using vegetable-based inks.

What we especially love is the way their pieces can sit just as happily in a grown-up interior as they can in a child’s room. A hummingbird beside a bed, a jewel-like beetle amongst framed art, or a butterfly appearing unexpectedly above a bookshelf can add personality without a room feeling overly styled.

And perhaps that is what Studio Roof does best: introduces an element of surprise. Something beautiful, slightly whimsical and completely unnecessary in the nicest possible way - the sort of detail that makes you look twice and smile.
