There is something rather lovely about having a small area of your home that feels distinctly yours. Maybe it is the chair you always curl up on to chat to a friend. Or the corner of the patio where you potter around growing herbs. Or the corner of the room where you can let creativity flow. When our children were little, it sometimes felt like the closest we could get to our own space was in the bathroom where we could close the door and have a moment of peace!
Your special space doesn’t need to be large, or beautifully styled, but it is well worth the effort to make it a place you love to spend time in.
Try this at home
Start with somewhere you already spend some time; a chair, a desk, your bedroom or even an outside bench.
Clear the area of clutter and then return only a few things that make being there more enjoyable. Maybe a lamp, a favourite book, or a small artwork.
And then definitely include some flowers or foliage. Whether you buy them, pick them or grow them, they will make such a difference.
Our studios are perhaps the ultimate spaces of our own, places where we can leave things out, follow an idea and come back to it later.
There are scraps of painted paper, scissors, brushes, half-finished ideas, and little colour combinations put aside simply because something about them caught our eye.
A creative space doesn’t have to be perfect. There is often something beautiful in the chaos!
