In praise of pink

Over the years pink has come and gone out of fashion. We’ve had millennial pink, barbie pink, hot pink, ballet pink, coral pink and every shade in between.

But to us, pink has always felt more timeless than trendy because it appears so abundantly in nature. Flowers are the obvious example but, once you start looking, pink is everywhere; the inside of a shell, the wings of a cockatoo, the flesh of a fig, or a sunset reflected on water.

Perhaps that is why we believe that there is always a place for a little pink at home.

Coloured pencils and assorted pink paper swatches

Ask Clare and Joy

What colours go well with pink?

Pink can feel completely different depending on what sits beside it, so it’s a lovely colour to experiment with using things you already have at home.

Pink with green feels botanical and natural. Pink with blue can feel fresh and a little unexpected. Pink with ochre or rust becomes warmer and earthier. Pink with navy or deep burgundy feels smart and sophisticated. Pink with plenty of white feels fresh, light and pretty.

Even small changes in shade can shift the mood, so try moving a few things around and see which combinations you’re drawn to.

Hands covered in vibrant pink paint

In our studio

There are days in the studio when the colour seems to end up everywhere.

The process of painting the tiny pieces and fiddly details of our paper flowers is not a tidy process. By the end of a session there sometimes seems to be as much paint on our hands as on the paper!

Vibrant pink Caladium leaves with green veins

Found beauty

Absolutely stunning tropical Caladium leaves that look as though someone has taken a paintbrush to them with a range of pink shades from blush to raspberry.

This is one of the plants that inspired our greenwall range of artworks which we make to order.

From the archives

Pink has found its way into our artworks again and again over the years. Sometimes it appears as just the palest hint of blush and for other pieces it takes over completely. This paper feather artwork from a few years ago was very much a celebration of pink in all its different shades.
