For the little ones

Decorating a child’s room gives you the chance to have a little fun. With nine children between us, we’ve learnt that it helps to keep the bigger pieces (furniture, flooring and the basic foundations of the room) fairly timeless, so they can grow with the child rather than needing to be replaced every few years. And adding plenty of storage is definitely a good idea.

Then bring in the colour and personality through the things that are easier to change; artwork, favourite toys, books, cushions, bedding and little decorative pieces. These are the details that will make the room feel like it really belongs to your child.

Try this at home

Arrange your children’s books by colour.

One of my (Clare’s) favourite things is reading, so I’ve always had a large collection of picture books, many picked up at op shops and book sales.

When my children were little, I realised they recognised their favourite books by their covers long before they could read the titles. Grouping the books by colour made it surprisingly easy for them to find the one they were looking for and, as a bonus, the shelves looked much calmer and more ordered.

On our studio table

Children are wonderfully instinctive with their use of colour and mark making. They don’t overthink things or try to be too neat and they don’t wait for an idea to be perfect before they begin.

We try to remind ourselves of this regularly. Sometimes the most interesting ideas appear when we stop trying to control every detail and allow things to be a little looser, brighter and less perfect.

Found beauty

Oh, how we miss those little squishy hands now that our children are older, paint-covered fingers, sticky palms and all.

Even the mess they could make has become part of the special memories!
