Our favourite things

If you stop and think about your favourite things at home, they are not necessarily the newest, the most beautiful or the most expensive. Often they are the things that hold a memory; maybe something brought home from a holiday, inherited from someone you love, made by your children, or simply used so often that it has become part of the rhythm of everyday life.

Not everything in a home can be a favourite, of course. There are plenty of things we choose because they are useful, practical or simply needed. But it is lovely to surround yourself with items that make you happy.

Try this at home

Poll the people you live with: What is your favourite thing in our house? Don’t give them any clues or suggestions. You may be surprised by the answers!

Here are a few of our families’ responses:

“Our dining table, because family high teas are the best!”

“My footy cards, because I like sorting them.”

“Sally the rocking horse, I used to love to ride her when I was little.”

On our studio table

Two of our favourite things…

An artwork almost ready for the framers, all layered, shaped, and given its final tweaks before it leaves the studio.

Beside it is one of our truly indispensable studio tools, our favourite scissors. They may not be the prettiest thing on the table, but we use them every single day and genuinely couldn’t make our work without them. After years of cutting thousands of tiny paper leaves, petals and shapes, the right pair has become every bit as important as the paint and paper.

More about us

We are sisters, and in many ways, especially when it comes to making our art, we are remarkably similar.

We are drawn to the same colours, notice the same tiny details, and often have the same idea at almost exactly the same time. Over the years, working together has shaped the way we make, edit and refine our pieces, until it can sometimes be hard to remember who first suggested what.

But of course, we are not exactly the same so, for this week’s Almanac, we thought we would share a few of our favourite things.

Found beauty

Window boxes overflowing with geraniums, bright, cheerful and a little unruly.

There is something particularly lovely about flowers spilling over a windowsill, softening the edges of a building and making the simplest or the most ornate façades come alive.

We both spent years living in the tropics, and our paper greenwall artworks take us back to lush gardens, frangipani scented air, and the wonderful warmth of balmy evenings.
