There is something about blue

There’s something about blue that we never seem to tire of. Perhaps because it is so present in nature from clear spring skies and deep water, to a tiny forget-me-not hidden amongst the grass. And it can feel completely different depending on its shade. Each shade brings a different feeling making it ever so versatile.

Our Mum often decorated with blue and white, and so when we moved to our own homes we, perhaps inevitably, used less of it. But, even when blue hasn’t been the main event, we are always drawn back to it.

Ask Clare and Joy

How do I mix and match blue patterned cushions?

The trick is not to try too hard to make them match. Choose your very favourite design and then pick other patterns that share a shade but vary the scale. Perhaps a larger floral or botanical print, with a smaller geometric pattern and something simpler in between.

We also like to mix different shades of blue rather than sticking to exactly the same tone. Indigo, denim, cornflower and soft blue can happily sit together, especially when you vary the density of colour.

We love putting together cushion combinations so get in touch for advice.

On our studio table

Sometimes the ideas come faster than we can keep up with them, and our studio tables end up covered with bits and pieces from several different artworks at once.

We actually like working this way. Switching between different styles, colours and techniques keeps things interesting, and often something we are trying on one artwork sparks an idea for another. The table might look a little chaotic, but there is usually plenty happening amongst the mess.

Found beauty

This Danish blue and white china was part of our everyday life growing up, and it is still in daily use at our parents’ house today. The delicate pattern, with its tiny flowers and delicate scalloped edges, holds so many memories of family dinners and special occasions.

A reminder that the things we use every day deserve a second look.

Out of the Blue was a very special commission for the newest yacht in the Ritz-Carlton fleet, now sailing the oceans. Made from hundreds of individually painted, cut and layered pieces of paper, this artwork moves through shades of blue, from soft watery tones to deeper ocean hues. It felt particularly fitting to create a piece inspired by the shifting colours of the sea for a work that would ultimately spend its life surrounded by it.

And there is something rather lovely about knowing that one of our artworks is now travelling the world.
